Abstract
Microformed optical waveguides, made by tapering and/or twisting fibers as they are passed through a
miniature heat zone, possess unique properties that may be exploited for polarization control, harsh-environment
sensing, dense multichannel coupling, spatial division multiplexing, amplification, and optical switching.
