Abstract
Modeling of photonic bandgaps in a resonant waveguide grating system is completed using the equations
describing a simple 1-D photonic crystal (a series of alternating slabs). The equations are modified to account for
the frequency dependence of the material index of refraction and depth of the grating, and an excellent agreement
with the experiment is realized using the TE<sub>0</sub> mode of
the waveguide. It is thought that the equations work well due to a grating waveguide emulating the conditions in a
periodic series of dielectric slabs.
